What do I learn from diamond certificate ?

A diamond certificate (or diamond grading report) is an objective, third-party scientific assessment of a stone's physical characteristics, quality, and origin, issued by an independent gemological laboratory such as the GIA, IGI, or AGS.

The 4Cs

  • Carat Weight: The precise mass of the diamond measured to the hundredth of a carat (1 carat = 0.20 grams).

  • Cut Grade: How effectively the diamond interacts with light to produce brilliance, fire, and scintillation (typically graded from Excellent to Poor for round brilliants).

  • Color Grade: The absence of color, evaluated on a standardized scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

  • Clarity Grade: The presence or absence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes under 10× magnification, ranging from Flawless (FL) down to Included ($I_1$–$I_3$).

Physical Dimensions and Cut Proportions

  • Exact Measurements: The diamond's dimensions in millimeters (length, width, and depth).

  • Proportion Profile: Critical angles and percentages that determine light performance, including table percentage, total depth percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness, and culet size.

Finish and Optical Properties

  • Polish: The smoothness of the facet surfaces.

  • Symmetry: How evenly balanced, aligned, and proportioned the facets are.

  • Fluorescence: Whether and how strongly the diamond emits a soft glow (usually blue) when exposed to long-wave ultraviolet light, graded from None to Very Strong.

Identity, Origin, and Integrity

  • Natural vs. Lab-Grown: Explicit confirmation of whether the diamond is mined from the earth or laboratory-grown.

  • Clarity Plot / Map: A diagram showing the exact location, type (e.g., feathers, crystals, clouds, pinpoints), and size of identifying internal and external characteristics.

  • Laser Inscription Registry: The unique report number microscopic-engraved on the diamond’s girdle, enabling physical verification against the paperwork.

  • Treatments: Disclosures regarding artificial treatments like laser drilling, fracture filling, or high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) color enhancement.

A grading certificate only evaluates quality and physical authenticity—it is not an insurance appraisal and does not assign a retail price or cash value.
