A diamond certificate, also known as a diamond grading report, is an objective assessment of a diamond’s quality, characteristics, and identity. It is issued by an independent gemological laboratory and provides important information to help you understand exactly what you are purchasing.
A grading report can be especially useful when comparing diamonds, verifying their characteristics, and making a confident purchase.
Understanding the 4Cs
The 4Cs — Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity — are the primary factors used to describe a diamond.
1. Carat Weight
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, not its physical size.
One carat equals 0.20 grams, and diamond weight is commonly recorded to the hundredth of a carat.
2. Cut Grade
Cut describes how effectively a diamond interacts with light.
A well-cut diamond can produce exceptional:
- Brilliance
- Fire
- Scintillation
For round brilliant diamonds, cut grades commonly range from Excellent to Poor.
3. Color Grade
Diamond color measures how much color is present in a stone.
The standard grading scale runs from:
D → Z
- D: Completely colorless
- E–F: Extremely colorless
- G–J: Near colorless
- K–Z: Increasingly noticeable yellow or brown tones
Generally, diamonds with less visible color are considered rarer.
4. Clarity Grade
Clarity refers to the presence or absence of internal inclusions and external blemishes, examined under 10× magnification.
The grading scale ranges from:
Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3).
A clarity grade helps describe the diamond’s internal characteristics and overall appearance.
